As you can see in Figure 10-7, the first name, last name, e-mail address, and card ID are required. If these fields aren t filled in, CardSpace will not allow you to send the card to the server (the Send button will be disabled). Clicking the Send button will then issue the card to the site. You can now click the Sign in now! button to send the credentials to the signed-in page. You can see this page in Figure 10-8. Note that this is just passing your identity credentials to the site. In most cases, the site will map these credentials to its account store, and based on a match there it will recognize you (or not).

Sessions may also be invalidated by the portlet directly, using the invalidate() method. This is useful when a user is logging out of a system, and you want to explicitly destroy the session.

The Skip() method skips the child elements and jumps directly to the next element. Skip() comes in handy when you want to bypass child nodes depending on a certain condition. Figure 3-6 shows how this method works.

The previous example demonstrated how a web site can use CardSpace on the client site to request and receive client credentials. In this section, you ll step through what it takes to build this application and run it on IIS. While CardSpace works on IIS 5, 6, and 7, this tutorial demonstrates installing certificates on IIS 7.

These session methods are similar to the methods on the HttpSession. The important difference is the existence of a portlet scope that allows more than one instance of a portlet to run at a time, and for portlets in the same portlet application to share information about the user s session.

Your development environment will need some configuration before you can use CardSpace effectively. Before you do anything else, make sure that you have the Windows SDK installed. Within the Windows SDK, find the file WCFSamples.zip in the samples directory. In here, you ll find the technology samples folder containing CardSpace samples. Look at the UsingCardSpacewithIE7 sample (note that CardSpace is not supported on earlier versions of Internet Explorer) and open the setup.bat file, using Notepad to inspect it. Each CardSpace sample uses a similar setup, and they all follow the same four steps. Execute the setup.bat file to install the sample. The next sections will describe how it sets up CardSpace on your server.

Because the portlet session is available to any portlets in the portlet application, it is possible for the portlets to access an object in the portlet session simultaneously. The portlet session does not synchronize access to its objects, so the portlet will need to manage any threading issues. The portlet session has the same thread model issues as the servlet session. In addition to threading issues, portlet applications deployed in a distributed environment have the same considerations as distributed servlets. Because a user may switch from server to server between requests, a portlet that supports clustering must only put serializable objects in the portlet session. In addition, the portlet should not use any static variables to hold information. The actual movement of the session between different servers in the cluster is left up to the portal vendors to determine, and it will probably also depend on the application server deployed in the environment. Not all portals will support distributed deployment.

The XmlTextReader class also provides four methods for moving between attributes. These methods, which are useful only for element nodes, are as follows: The MoveToAttribute() method accepts the index or name of the attribute to navigate to and moves the reader to the attribute. The MoveToFirstAttribute() method takes the reader to the first attribute of the current element. The MoveToNextAttribute() method moves the reader to the next attribute of the current element. The MoveToElement() method moves the reader back to the element node whose attributes were just read. Figure 3-7 shows how all these methods work.
