In this chapter, you ll take a look at getting started with using CardSpace on your site, seeing how you can accept information that comes from a card For the sake of simplicity, you ll be using user-issued cards only which for all intents and purposes appear to be the same to you as the receiver of the information You ll look at how to set up your system to try out CardSpace on your local IIS, and delve into some programming examples around accepting and parsing information out of cards that the user sends to you First, however, you ll take a look at the client UI for CardSpace..

The ReadSubTree() method reads subnodes of the current node and returns the subtree as another XmlReader instance. This method is useful when you are parsing huge documents but want to work with a small section at a time. Figure 3-3 shows pictorially how this method works.

In Windows XP you can launch CardSpace by using the Windows CardSpace entry in the , Control Panel. This will launch the Information Cards window (see Figure 10-1).

If you need the names of the attributes in the session, the two getAttributeNames() methods will provide an Enumeration of attribute names. One method takes the scope as an argument, and the method with no arguments uses the portlet scope.

From the figure you can see that if you call ReadSubTree() when your XmlTextReader is on an <employee> node of the document, the ReadSubTree() method returns another XmlReader containing that <employee> node and all its child nodes (that is, the subtree of the <employee> node).

This application has the same functionality, but a slightly different UI from the Windows Vista version that will be shown throughout the rest of this chapter. Using this application, you can create a new self-issued card containing your credentials, or import cards that have been provided by managed identity providers as CRD or CRDS files. The Vista interface is shown in Figure 10-2. You can access Windows CardSpace from the Control Panel in the User Accounts and Family Safety section.

The ReadToDescendant() method advances the XmlTextReader to the next occurrence of the specified child node. This method comes in handy when you want to jump to a specific node rather than sequentially moving there. Figure 3-4 shows how this method works.

The first time you use CardSpace, you ll likely see a setup like that in Figure 10-2. You have no cards in your wallet, but you have the facility to add a new self-issued card or import one from a managed provider.

The portlet session shares all of its attributes with the web application session. If the portlet application uses servlets or JSP pages, the session available to those resources will have the same attributes, and the portlet reflects any changes to the attributes in the portlet session when control returns to the portlet. Like the servlet API, objects may implement the HttpSessionBindingListener interface. These listener objects receive a notification when bound into a session or are unbound from a session. You will need to specify the session listeners in the web application deployment descriptor using the <listener> and <listener-class> XML elements.

To add a new card to your CardSpace wallet, click the Add a card icon ( Create a new card, if you are using XP). You ll be taken to the next step of the wizard, where you can either create a personal card or install a managed card (see Figure 10-3).

Portlet sessions provide the time when the user last accessed the session. You can use this to provide a session timeout countdown to users, to warn them that the portal will drop their session after an amount of time has passed. The getCreationTime() method returns the time when the portal created the session. This time is in milliseconds since 1970.
