The portlet session utility class, PortletSessionUtility, is useful for working with the encoded session attributes in the portlet scope. (We discussed the different session scopes earlier.) The PortletSessionUtility provides two static methods for decoding session attributes. The first method, decodeAttributeName(), takes an encoded session attribute name and returns a decoded attribute name. If the session attribute is in the application scope, it does not need to be decoded, so the argument is just returned as the value.

The batch file should register CAPICOM.dll for you. On some systems this fails, so if you are having trouble installing the CardSpace samples, register it manually. You do this by changing to the Bin folder in the Windows SDK directory and issuing the following command from a DOS prompt:

Figure 3-7. Moving between attributes As you can see in Figure 3-7, if you call MoveToAttribute() by passing firstname as the parameter, the reader moves to the firstname attribute. When you are on the lastname attribute, calling MoveToFirst() will take the reader to the id attribute. Calling MoveToNextAttribute() when the reader is on the id attribute will advance the reader to the firstname attribute. Finally, calling MoveToElement() from any attribute will take the reader back to the <employee> element.

This registers the DLL for you. Using /s does a silent installation, where you don t get the various status updates. CAPICOM.dll is the implementation of the CAPICOM security layer, which allows for easy integration of security, digital signing, and encryption onto web pages. It is part of the Windows SDK, and can be found in the Bin directory. It provides a COM interface to the Microsoft CryptoAPI and exposes a set of its functions allowing for easy incorporation of digital signing and encryption into your programs. It provides support for smart cards, software keys, verification of digitally signed data, certificates, and more. It s well worth a look at its functions, but a deep dive goes beyond the scope of this book. However, the SDK documentation is a great place to start if you are serious about security in your web applications.

The value returned is either PortletSession.PORTLET_SCOPE or PortletSession.APPLICATION_SCOPE. Both of these methods look at the name of the attribute to determine if it starts with the portlet scope namespace, which is javax.portlet.p .

The next function that the batch file performs is installing the certificates that are necessary to allow the site to be authenticated and trusted with HTTPS in the browser. The ReadInnerXml() method reads all the XML content inside the current node and returns it as a string. The returned string does not contain the current node markup.
