There are three required portlet modes: VIEW, EDIT, and HELP All portals must . support these modes, but portlets have to support only the VIEW mode. The VIEW mode is the default mode that the portlet will render content for. Portlets should use the VIEW mode for their typical behavior, such as displaying the weather. Because the default portlet mode for a portlet when it is first loaded is VIEW, any content will have to be in the VIEW mode. If your portlet needs to display content that would normally be in the EDIT portlet mode when it first loads, you should just display it as normal. Our weather portlet would use the EDIT mode to allow the user to put in a different location, or to change the display to show a seven-day weather forecast. The EDIT mode should be used to provide a way to change the settings for the portlet s display or business logic. The HELP portlet mode may be used to give the end user help content about the portlet. The HELP mode could display a single HTML file with some help, or it could be the entry into a more sophisticated help system with an index, a search engine, or other advanced features.

Represents ASCII encoding. This encoding encodes Unicode characters as single 7-bit ASCII characters. Represents Unicode encoding. This scheme encodes Unicode characters as 2 bytes. Represents UTF-7 encoding. The characters are stored in 7-bit format. Represents UTF-8 encoding. The characters are stored in 8-bit format. This is the default scheme.

The portal container does not restrict the portlet from any behavior inside the portlet modes. You could add a form to allow the user to set preferences for the portlet inside the VIEW mode if you wanted. It would be bad form to do so, because the user expects that preferences are set through the available EDIT mode on the portlet. The decision to break up functionality into different mode should be based on usability and user expectations for behavior. Sending and receiving e-mail should belong in the VIEW mode, while the user s mail server settings should be changed in the EDIT mode.

Running this page will give you the simple site that you saw earlier in this chapter. It is shown again in Figure 10-12.

Portals can also provide custom modes that are proprietary to a vendor. The portlet API defines several extended modes that a portal vendor may implement this standardized naming should make it easier to make the portlets that use these custom modes portable. The suggested extended modes are: ABOUT CONFIG EDIT_DEFAULTS PREVIEW PRINT The ABOUT portlet mode is useful for displaying information about the creator of the portlet, the version number, and the name of the portlet product. Portal administrators can use a portlet in CONFIG mode to change portlet preferences that are not able to be modified by portlet users. (For more on portlet preferences, see 7.) Portlets may provide a user interface to edit default settings for portlet preferences in the EDIT_DEFAULTS mode. Both the CONFIG and the EDIT_DEFAULTS portlet modes are meant for use by portal administrators. The PREVIEW mode is used for displaying default content that shows how the portlet would look under real usage. Portlets should not try to make any database or other connections in PREVIEW mode, and should not rely on the portlet user. The PREVIEW portlet mode can be used for display in a portal s portlet catalog, or when the user customizes his home page. Portlets should use their most typical layout, with dummy text or plausible defaults. Portals may support a printer-friendly mode for portlets called PRINT. In the PRINT mode, portlets should render content that is suitable for printing. This could mean that the portlet is stripped of any unnecessary navigation or input elements. VIEW mode might display links for editing or downloading a piece of content in addition to the content. The PRINT mode would just display the content itself. The portal vendor will decide which portlet modes to support beyond the required modes. Portlets could implement these suggested modes, but portlets are not required to support them for operation. Usually, the portal page will show the appropriate GUI elements to switch between portlet modes for a portlet; only the allowed portlet modes will have elements.
