Figure 3-11. XML document without any formatting What s the problem Well, there is no problem as far as the document being well formed. It does follow all the rules of XML grammar. However, the document lacks proper formatting. Such documents are difficult for the human eye to read. Fortunately, the XmlTextWriter class provides several formatting options that help you create well-formatted documents. To see how these formatting options work, you need to modify the previous application so it looks like the one shown in Figure 3-12.

The portlet can switch to another portlet mode during action request processing or when a user triggers a portlet URL that directs the portlet to enter a specific portlet mode. The end user can also switch the portlet mode by using a user interface element provided by the portal server. It is up to the portal to provide an indicator to the user that a portlet is in a given portlet mode, but it is not required. Of course, the portlet can also tell the user what portlet mode it is in as part of its display. The ActionResponse object contains the setPortletMode() method, which takes a valid PortletMode object as an argument:

The application has a check box that toggles whether the document will be formatted. You can specify the indention as well as the indent character (space or tab). If the portlet mode is custom, the portlet should ask the portlet request if the portlet mode is valid by using the isPortletModeAllowed() method on the PortletRequest object:

The Formatting property of XmlTextWriter governs whether the document will be formatted. The Formatting property is an enumeration of type Formatting and contains two possible values: None and Indented. The Indentation property of XmlTextWriter specifies the number of indent characters to be written in the document. This property is useful only if Formatting is set to Indented. The IndentChar property holds the character to be used for indentation. Though you can specify any valid character for IndentChar, space and tab are commonly used. If you export the Customers table after making the preceding modifications, the resultant document should resemble Figure 3-13.

This script uses the element _xmltoken to get its value and load that into a var that will fill a text box on the page. The _xmltoken field is a CardSpace object, whose definition looks like this:

The setPortletMode() method will throw a PortletModeException if the portlet mode is not valid or supported. Links and forms can trigger a change to a new portlet mode. The portlet URL must have the portlet mode set on the URL using the setPortletMode() method on the PortletURL object. Like the setPortletMode() method on ActionResponse, it takes a PortletMode object as an argument, and if it is invalid or unsupported, the method will throw a PortletModeException.
