Figure 3-16. Dealing with nontextual data The application allows you to read any image file and serialize it as an XML document. You can specify the source image filename and the destination XML filename in the text boxes. After you save the image as an XML document, you can validate whether the serialized image is correct by loading it in a picture box.

If the portlet supports custom portlet modes, it can use this method to find out if the portal supports the portlet modes, or it can ask the request if the portlet mode is supported with the isPortletModeAllowed() method on the PortletRequest object. In either case, the portlet specifies which custom modes it supports in its portlet application deployment descriptor.

As you can see, the xamlFragment is a string containing a new piece of XAML. This is created and a reference to it returned to the textBlock var. This reference is then added to the tree by adding it to the children of the root element.

The portal can display one or more portlets at a time on the portal page. These portlets can take up various amounts of screen space, and the portal container can tell the portlet what type of space it expects to fill. The portlet can use this information, called a window state, to determine how much information to display. The portlet API specifies three different window states. Each portal may define custom window states for other uses. The portlet must explicitly support these custom window states and cannot use any window states that are not defined by the portal. Therefore, if you decide to support a proprietary window state, it may work on only one portal server.

XAML nodes may be named using their x:Name attribute. Should you want to manipulate the content of the XAML node (to, for example, change the contents of a TextBlock), you do so by using the findName method to get a reference to that node, and then editing the reference. This was shown in our first example, in the event handler for clicking the TextBlock. Here s the code again:

The NORMAL window state is for portlets that appear on the portal page in their default setting with other portlets. Most portlets will be displaying the most essential information to a user in this setting, and will not take up unnecessary screen real estate. For example, an e-mail portlet might inform the user that there are seven new e-mails, and provide a link to view them.
